Santorini will never be Santorini without its majestic sunsets in Oia. You’ve probably seen the famous postcard image of this island’s blue domes sitting pretty on top of its cliffs or the poetic sun setting beside its iconic windmills.
The truth is that Santorini sunsets are stunning. It’s so stunning that it’s attracting too many tourists ;-( And if you’re a fan of quiet and peaceful sunsets, it might be a little disappointing for you.
Getting a photo is very challenging. Imagine throngs of tourists and aliens suddenly photo bombing just as you’re ready to unleash your perfect smile :)) (Hello Ateng! Emote ka pa d’yan! 😛 )
Getting the perfect shot entails a lot of PATIENCE… It’s like lining up for a crowded museum. But who cares, with too many beautiful backdrops to choose from, you would not resist on capturing endless photos (even the usual touristy photos). I was so lucky to have met a fellow solo traveler from Ecuador who also loved taking photos 😉
After Santorini, I can now change my Facebook profile picture every other day. I am now your reigning selfie queen!

Reserving a space for sunset
If you’re in paradise, you wouldn’t mind being one of many tourists out there waiting for nature’s grand performance. Three hours before sundown, crowds start to reserve their chosen spots for sunset watching.
Be sure to find your perfect post hours before… and bring snacks and drinks to celebrate this awesome view 🙂
Walking in Oia can also be a good exercise with its up & down routes.
The presence of cute shops and breathtaking hotels makes walks here very enjoyable. You’d wish to own one small apartment with a heated pool and big balcony somewhere here 😛

Sunsets in Oia may be crowded but it is still breathtaking. Sure, it is very hard to find a relaxing space (without accidentally elbowing strangers) but there is still profundity when you’re one with hundreds of people applauding after the sun stages its final dance.
But what I enjoyed the most was when crowds started to disappear. With the moon glowing and the sky displaying different kinds of hues, Santorini became even more peaceful and stunning. Even without a hand to hold on to, it was perfect for this lone wolf. Santorini, for a brief moment, was all mine.
